Purchasing a sewing machine from BTHQ – Our recommendations

We are often asked what sewing machines we use at the studio to teach our classes, so we have put together a little blog post with some of our recommendations.

We hire our machines from Janome and are limited to only a couple of machines that we can hire.  The machine we have chosen is the M50QDC.  This is a lovely computerised machine with some great features including the much-loved CUT BUTTON however it is a little on the expensive side for a starter machine coming in at £599.

We are also retailers of Janome machines and can source you any machine you wish to purchase for a very good price.  We will also include a free unboxing session to help you thread it and master all of the features of the machine if you choose to collect your machine from the studio.

Personally, if you have the budget for this level of machine we would recommend the DKS100SE.  It has an extra 50 stitches more than the M50QDC. It still have the coveted CUT BUTTON and it looks beautiful as well.  It is the same price but we can sometimes offer a small discount depending on the offers available with Janome at the time you order.

If £599 is way out of your budget then we would recommend you loose the CUT BUTTON.  (Yes I know, you really want one, but they are super pricey).

You can have a computerised machine with 30 stitches and all of the other settings required for £399 if you purchase the 230DC.  These are the machines we used to teach on at BTHQ back in 2019

Lastly, if a computerised machine is out of your budget then sticking to a good ‘work horse’ of a manual machine is not a bad thing.  Perfect for beginner sewers and those with a limited budget is the Janome 219-S.  We have these in stock at the studio ready to collect and take straight home with you. Currently available at a reduced rate of £120

So if you’d like to take the leap and purchase a machine for yourself, we would be happy to help.  The above models are just our recommendations based on current prices and what we have used and loved, but we can source any model of Janome or Elna machine for you and will always be happy to give you a competitive rate.

Please consider purchasing from a small independent business instead of a large organisation.  Every little bit helps ‘keep it local’.

We can also help you with overlockers and embroidery machines too.

Simply send us a message or give us a call on 01277 811136 and we would be only too happy to help.  Delivery is free to BTHQ or £11 direct to a UK address and all machines come with a standard 2-year warranty.

Today we are delighted to be introducing a new cha Today we are delighted to be introducing a new challenge to you that is free to join in with. We hope it will encourage you to try something new.

The 'Sew out of your comfort zone challenge' is designed to encourage you to create something that you wouldn't normally try, or to venture into a new sewing territory.

Maybe there is a pattern you think just wont suit you, but you've seen lots of other people making it and are tempted to give it a try. Maybe there is a new technique you've always wanted to have a go at but have been to scared to try. You might have been sewing for years but have never tried a particular fabric or method before.

Sandra has always avoided the Tilly & The Buttons Indigo dress as it has soooo much gathering and she thought it would not be all that flattering. But she's seen me wearing my many versions and has now decided to give it a go.

I have made lots of jumpsuits but have never worked with Scuba before or a Deer and Doe pattern so I'm giving it a go for the first time.

Join us during Februrary and pick something that pushes you out of your comfort zone. Be sure to post your progress on social media using the hashtag #sewoutofmycomfortzone and we can all hold your hand in the process.

Hi it’s Sandra. I’ve finished my first project Hi it’s Sandra. I’ve finished my first project on my #makenine2023 list. It’s the Atlas Bag by Swoon patterns. It looks so pretty but I don’t like it! I used a vinyl that I realised I didn’t have enough of, so lined the straps in cotton, but don’t like that they are then facing upwards with the lining.
The straps are also ridiculously long. The bag is much too wide for my shoulders so isn’t comfortable to wear. Never mind, good reason to try another pattern!
