Dressmaking lessons – (Beginner – Intermediate)

Description

There are many days at the Beautiful Things studio when a class may not be full, we may have space and machines free and the opportunity to teach you whatever it is you’d like to learn.

We’ve decided to reserve these slots for those of you who would like to learn dressmaking at your own pace.

These sessions are suitable for beginner dressmakers and we would happily recommend patterns for you.  Something like a simple t-shirt or sweatshirt if you are looking to learn to sew with Jersey or a shift dress, pencil skirt or pair of floaty trousers if you are looking to sew with woven.

For those of you who want to up your skills a little and try a wrap dress or shirt dress, or something a little more taxing using a commercial pattern we can also help.

Please note that only basic fitting can be taught at these sessions and any kind of major alterations or pattern drafting can only be done by our specialist tutors. We may advise you to make a toile of a garment before cutting into your best fabric if we have not tried the pattern before.

Simply book a session for the correct amount of time (based on our outfit guide below) and then Claire will be in touch to book you in for a time to suit you both and to discuss what you will be making.

Sessions take place on Tuesdays between 10am – 2pm, Wednesdays & Fridays between 10am – 4pm.  Sadly at this time there is no weekend or evening availability.

If you book a 2-day session then we may book in your first session and see how you get on before booking your second.  Likewise, if you choose to split your day into 2 half-day sessions we will work in the same way. If you book 1 day and find that you need an additional day these can be purchased at a later date.

Here is our guide to what’s possible and how long it will take:

Basic T-shirt – 1 day (you will have time to cut out a 2nd)

Shift or tea dress – 2 days/4 half days

Jersey dress such as Tilly & The Buttons Coco or Kielo wrap dress – 1 day/2 half days

Wrap dress Jersey – 1 day/2 half days (possibly 2 days if excess gathering or complicated ties)

Shirt dress, woven wrap dress or heavily gathered buffet dress such as Tilly & The Buttons Indigo – 2 days/4 half days
