Beginners sewing 101 – Kids version

£35.00 – £60.00

Do you have a young fashion designer in your home?

Maybe you’d like to refresh your sewing skills, and it’s something you could do together with a young person in your household.

Our popular beginners sewing 101 for adults has been a huge success. It’s a great course suitable from age 12 and up but we thought that something was missing so we’re proud to introduce Beginner Sewing 101 The Kids Edition!

Description

This course is aimed at ages roughly seven to 12, obviously, everybody’s child is different and if you’ve got a five-year-old who’s itching to sew, there’s absolutely no reason why they can’t do this course too. They’re just going to need a little bit more adult supervision than perhaps your 11-year-old would do during the course.

We encourage the children to do as much by themselves as they possibly can but we do make suggestions when it may be an idea to call on an adult. Using the steam iron for instance, or particularly sharp fabric scissors.

There are clear simple video instructions for each of the three projects that the children will undertake during their course and we use close-up camera angles to make sure that they don’t miss a thing.

There are PDFs available for each of the projects that you can choose to print off in advance of the session or they can read them from an iPad or computer.

During the course they’re going to make three projects.

The first one, a lovely little string of bunting for them to hang anywhere they like.

The second project, a super duper little tote bag.

The third project an elasticated skirt.

Each of these projects teaches different skills, and each project builds on those skills so that once they’ve completed the course they should be in a position to move on to bigger and better things.

There are additional videos included in the course as well such as:

  • How to buy your first sewing machine
  • What sewing machine do I need?
  • How to thread your sewing machine
  • What tools do I need?
  • How to cut out fabric accurately.

Those are all little bonus videos that we’ve taken from our adults courses, but we think they’ll be really useful to both you and your child.

The course content will be added to your own personal portal on our website that you can access forever just as soon as you purchase, giving you instant access.

You can dip in and dip out as much as you like.

You can work in small chunks every day or you can work all in one go over a weekend. It’s entirely up to you so let’s get our kids learning to sew.

Last but not least, let’s talk about the skirt project… we appreciate that’s a pretty female-led project. As I mentioned the skills that you learn in the three projects build really nicely and they’re also really essential.

Once you’ve made these 3 things you can go on to make things such as pyjama bottoms or shorts, which obviously males or females can wear.

We suggest if you’ve got a young man interested in doing this course you encourage them to make the skirt for a friend, sister, mum or just give them that gentle nudge they need to remind them that once they’ve learned these skills, they can go on to make anything they like.

Oh and if that wasn’t enough, just in case you do get stuck at any time we’ve got a dedicated FB group for you to share your projects and ask any questions you have! You can join the group without having purchased the course if you’d like to see how others have got on or ask questions of the other parents or children taking part.

What will you need to take part?

You will need a sewing machine that sews a straight line.  An iron and an ironing board, fabric scissors, pins or clips and a few simple tools.  There is a whole list and suggested links included in the course but there is no huge outlay required to get started. You will probably have most things at home.

As far as fabric is concerned we sell everything you need in our online shop and you can choose to purchase the course only, watch the intro videos and download the shopping list and then go shopping with your child online with us or to your local fabric shop together.

To make your life easier though we do sell a course and kit option and we will post out all your fabric supplies to you within 3 days of your order.  You will receive everything you need to make each item on the course but fabric choices will vary from kit to kit.

I used to hesitate to create online courses for ch I used to hesitate to create online courses for children as I thought it would have to involve the parents too much, the kids might loose interest or not see the relevance of sewing as a skill in our modern age.

That was until I asked some children and their parents to test out the idea … and I was amazed by the results, the enthusiasm, the excitement with which the children completed the course and were hungry for more, to move on to the BTHQ adult courses!

One thing I hadn’t thought of is how eco conscious our kids are these days … the appeal of throw away fashion vs creating something from nothing or reusing fabric from other sources really appeals to a lot of children who want a different, better future for our planet … learning to sew … to reuse, repurpose, recycle fashion and fabrics is a great way to encourage and support your child and generations to come in helping forge a sustainable future for the planet they will inherit.

I am so proud of the new Kids sewing 101 course. Those who have already completed it have done amazing things and it’s not just their sewing that has improved … it’s their self confidence, their sense of who they are and what they can achieve and their imagination about the next thing they want to make!

If you want to find out more then head to our website (link in the bio) and search kids 101. It's instant access and suitable for total beginners.
